Phone Scam Warning:
The Burbank Police Department is issuing an alert for citizens to hang up the phone if they receive an unexpected collect call from a prisoner at the Illinois Department of Corrections or other prison facility.
What is the call forwarding phone scam?
This scam is usually referred to as the "72#" or "*72" scam, What many people do not realize is that when someone forwards a call to a number, collect, or other pay-service phone number, charges for those services are placed on their account, not to the phone from which the call originated. Con-artists count on their potential victims not knowing that distinction.
If you think you may have fallen victim to the call-forwarding scam, pressing *73 or 73# (depending on your service provider) will turn off the call-forwarding feature. You may also want to alert your local law enforcement agency of the scam and keep a close eye on your phone bill. Also, contact your phone-service provider if you think there are calls on your account that you did not place.
To have your phone number blocked by the Department of Corrections citizens should call (773) 869-3045 please leave a voice message with your; Name, Phone number, and a brief statement stating you have been the victim of a 72# phone scam.
If you have further questions please contact the Burbank Police Department (708) 924-7300
