Narragansett Avenue Improvement Project

In Mid-November 2007, the Cook County Highway Department initiated the planning phase of a project to improve Narragansett Avenue between 87th Street and 79th Street in the City of Burbank.  The main goal of the Narragansett Avenue Improvement Project is to provide a new highway facility to accommodate the traffic demands and improve safety within the corridor.

It is anticipated that the scope of work for the project will include the widening and reconstruction of Narragansett Avenue to include one lane in each direction with a continuous center lane for left turns.  New parking lanes will also be provided.  Concrete curb and gutter will be constructed along the outside edges of pavement and a new underground storm sewer drainage system will be provided.  What this means is that the gravel shoulders and roadside ditches which currently exist along both sides of the road will be eliminated.  This project will provide a significant upgrade for the motorists, as well as the property owners alongside the Narragansett Avenue corridor.

For this first phase of the project, the County has hired Patrick Engineering to prepare a preliminary engineering study that will analyze data, develop improvement recommendations, and prepare a report of the findings.  The first phase will also include a Public Meeting, where the improvement proposals will be presented and public comment will be solicited.  The Public Meeting is scheduled for the Spring/Summer of 2008.  Latter phases will include the detailed design of the proposed improvement and then actual construction.  This project is funded by Cook County in their five-year program and is targeted for construction in 2010.
